The Seniors Nursing House
The building was constructed from 1928 to 1933 and was intended to be a summer villa of the great Bulgarian entrepreneur Semov and his family. It was a project of a famous architect from the city of Gabrovo Nikola Grublev. The four – storey building is surrounded by beautifully designed park and a lake in front of it, designed by European specialists in park construction. The park alleys and the bridge over the river led to the other emblematic building bequeathed to us by Pencho Semov – “The Ship”.
The winter garden was built by the villa with steam heating in which exotic plants were grown.
The villa had its own chapel named “St. St. Peter and Paul”. It was located on the ground floor of the building. The extraordinary marble iconostasis, made by Czech sculptor Joseph Schwara, was amazing with its beauty. After the death of Pencho Semov, during the communists dictatorship it was dismantled and used as a memorial plaque at a grave of a local guerrilla. Part of it was rescued and turned into a parapet on a staircase of a church.
Joseph Shkwara made in 1932-1933 also the sculpture of The Angel with the Old Man and the Old Woman, which is affixed as a symbol on the tower of the Senior’s Nursing home.
In his will, Pencho Semov wanted this building to be used as a home for the elderly, with care for them free of charge – taken entirely by a charity foundation bearing his name.
