The Renaissance Theater
The building from 1900 is designed by the famous arch. Nikola Lazarov.
The history of “Sofia’s “Foley Berger”, the “New America” variety show is arranged as follows:
– Empty brewery near the Weiss mill, Vazrazhdane Square – 1898,
– “New America” Summer Garden Theater – founder Yanko Petrov – until 1914,
– Variety “New America” – owner Grigor Petrov – after 1918,
– “Renaissance Theater”, Cooperative Operetta Theater under the direction of Ivan Stanev – until 1940,
– Cinema and Workers’ House “G. Dimitrov “- after 1945,
– “Sin City” club – 1990 -2000;
– Currently – abandoned and awaiting for an “accidental” fire or demolition…
The “Renaissance Theater” is one of the oldest and most popular theater buildings in the capital. There is hardly a citizen or visitor of the Capital who has not visited this building, which will remain historic for our performing arts. The theater was built on an area of 1000 square meters in 1900. For its time it was the largest and most modern theater hall in the country. The “Cooperative Theater” has been playing in it since its foundation. This theater hall is a silent witness to the development of Bulgarian theatrical art.
In the 1920s. the building has been renovated and reopened as the “New America Variety”.
The “New America” consisted of a large lounge and cafe with tables on the ground floor, surrounded by two rows of loggias and a lobby. The venue can accommodate 1,200 people and has an outdoor garden where performances are given during the summer. The program consists of a variety of entertainment, including two series of cinematic screenings each night.
The future of this downtown treasure is insecure and unknown. Despite of it’s cultural and historical value and protection by the law, a demolition is very possible.
